Airport Departure
Departure
of the Holy Father from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport
Wednesday, January 27, 1999
The
Departure Ceremonies offered the St. Louis community an opportunity
to give a final word of thanks and bid farewell to the Holy Father
following his two historic days in St. Louis. The Departure Ceremony's
theme centered on the overall theme of the Holy Father's visit to
St. Louis — "to ensure the power of salvation may be shared
by all." The ceremonies gave a special prominence to persons
and organizations throughout the Archdiocese involved in service to
individuals and families.
Altogether, about 2,400 people participated in the Departure Ceremonies.
Seeing the Holy Father off for his journey back to Rome were Vice
President Al Gore and Mrs. Gore, Archbishop Justin Rigali and other
dignitaries. They were joined by hundreds of representatives of Catholic
and Archdiocesan service and educational organizations serving the
needs of the community, including Catholic Charities, Birthright,
Office of Laity and Family Life (which includes Natural Family Planning),
Human Rights Office, Pro-Life, health care professionals and workers,
and educators. In addition, 600 young people from around the Archdiocese
recently Confirmed or preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation
attended.
