Most Blessed Sacrament
Most Blessed Sacrament was founded in 1907 as part of the city’s World Fair growth stimulus. Most Blessed Sacrament’s edifice was located at the corner of Northland Avenue and North Kingshighway. By 1915 the permanent church building had been erected, followed by a school, convent, and rectory. In 1971 the parish merged its school with St. Edward, Visitation/Holy Ghost, St. Philip Neri, and St. Adalbert parishes to form Bishop Healy School. After more than 90 years of service, due to the declining Catholic population in the area, this parish, known as the “flagship of the African-American Catholic community” in the 1960s and 1970s was asked by the Archdiocese to close its doors and merge its faith community with St. Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist, at 4330 Shreve.
