Local parishes maintain the sacramental records of their constituencies and the permanent records of the parish required by Canon Law. Parishes and institutions have many records, in addition to Sacramental Records, which have significant historical value not only to that specific institution but also to the Archdiocese as a whole.

Consequently, materials from local parishes, just as agencies and organizations, can be regularly transferred to the Archdiocesan Archives and Records Office. These materials are permanently retained in the Archdiocesan Archives and Records Office as they tell the story of the Catholic Church in this area. Appointments are recommended and requested so that limited space and equipment can be made available.

Archives and Records provides an important service to the church personnel of individual parishes by making older sacramental records available (see Sacramental Policy) and by sharing expertise with genealogical researchers to the extent resources permit. Parish personnel can then focus on the administration of the sacraments and current records rather than searching past records for ancestors.
