Catholic Charities–Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed City Greens produce markets, with the goal to get produce into the kitchens of all families.
Last year, Catholic Charities Community Services–Midtown piloted a successful farmers’ market which served about 200 families and purchased produce from a group of 27 small Missouri farmers. Catholic Charities hopes to double that success with the addition of a market at the Catholic Charities Community Services–Father Tolton location this year. Staff will deliver fruits and vegetables to 100 home-bound seniors.
On-site nutrition education and cooking demos, music and other entertainment are all part of the plan for this year. Elementary-aged youth attending Father Tolton’s free summer program have already connected with Metro High School science-achievers to learn how to grow fresh flowers and herbs and will sell products grown at the centers’ markets.
The Midtown and Father Tolton Centers are committed to finding the best ways to ensure that basic needs (food, shelter, and clothing) are met in the neighborhoods they serve. Increasingly, outreach workers are finding that health issues families face are nutrition related. Diabetes, heart disease, and obesity are all difficult to manage without fresh, affordable, healthy food. In the neighborhoods where the outreach sites are located, grocery stores are difficult to access, especially for families relying on public transportation.
Join Catholic Charities at the two markets to celebrate another fruitful year!
