Donates $20,000 to fund utility assistance

St. Louis, MO - In the midst of the extreme, record-breaking heat, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson has given Catholic Charities of St. Louis $20,000 to help with utility bills for the poor.

"Catholic Charities intends to reserve their funds for individuals on fixed income (i.e. aged, disabled) within the city and throughout the Archdiocese as a whole who have incurred bills as a result of this extreme weather," stated Brian O’Malley, President of Catholic Charities of St. Louis.

Considering how closely Catholic Charities collaborates with St. Vincent DePaul of St. Louis to offer emergency assistance and identify resources that assist the most, Catholic Charities in turn has given the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul of Saint Louis half of these funds. O’Malley arranged this agreement "to demonstrate our mutual support and care for the poor and marginalized."

John Foppe, Executive Director of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Saint Louis expresses his gratitude saying, "We are very thankful to be involved in this matter. In 2011 alone, Vincentians provided utility assistance to over 4,400 families and individuals throughout the Greater Saint Louis metropolitan area and Eastern Missouri. With this additional funding, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul plans to provide support to families and individuals who have had their electric, gas, or wa-ter utilities disconnected, or who are in danger of an immediate disconnection, for any number or long-term or temporary crises"
