The girls have truly seen a glimpse into the very heart of Mary. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to spend time with them as they learned to be able to step into the shoes of Mary and learn from her example how to make all the various activities of life- a willingness to glorify God. As future wives…mothers….and as children of God, may they keep their hearts always turned toward God as they carry out all their many and various activities with which they will find themselves involved, simple because they had said “yes” with the heart of Mary.
The above quote is from an adult moderator for the Mary, the First Disciple faith formation program, which is one of the many faith formation programs offered by the Office of Catholic Scouting Ministry. Through this program, girls grow in an appreciation of Mary and in an understanding of themselves. On Sunday, March 8, the 185 girls who have completed the Mary, the First Disciple faith formation program and the 13 girls who have completed The Spirit Alive! program will be recognized at the annual Presentation Sunday Prayer Service. Sixteen adult leaders will also be presented with the St. Anne and the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Awards. The annual prayer service will be held at the Cathedral Basilica on Lindell Blvd. It begins at 2:30 pm and will conclude at 3:30 pm.
The Mary, the First Disciple program is open to all girls in grades seven through twelve. Through various service projects, discussions and celebrations, the girls grow to understand and know Mary as a model of openness and spirituality – a woman of the Church. It enables them to “proclaim the greatness of the Lord” and is a unique opportunity to develop new insights into their personalities, friends, parents, and the world around them.
The Spirit Alive! is another faith formation program offered by the Office of Catholic Scouting Ministry. The Spirit Alive helps young people grow in their awareness of the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit has manifested itself in the history of the people of God. With emphasis on prayer, study of Scripture, documents of Vatican II, and service to others, this program assists youth in discovering how the Holy Spirit moves in their lives, calling them to a greater participation in the Church’s ministry.
