Local Catholics Surpass Goal For Annual Catholic Appeal

Saint Louis Shows Its Generosity Again: Appeal Surpasses Goal by $1.3 Million
ST. LOUIS —Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, announced today the results of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal. More than 60,000 Catholic households contributed more than $13.3 million—the largest amount the Appeal has ever raised—surpassing the Appeal goal by $1.3 million. “Once again the generous people of the Archdiocese of St. Louis have shared their gifts to help fund our ministries and help those in need. We are blessed by their support and hope-filled faith,” said Archbishop Carlson.
Through the Appeal, Catholics extend help to the poor, the elderly, immigrants, refugees, and those suffering from addiction and violence in the community. “This year, even amid so much uncertainty, Catholics gave more than ever to support the mission of the Church they love, to provide help to those in need, and to share the Good News in our communities,” said Brian Niebrugge, Director of the Annual Catholic Appeal.
Because of the generosity of those in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the additional money raised will be used in several areas of importance to the local Church, including support for Catholic education, parish life, Catholic Charities, evangelization initiatives, and support of the archdiocese’s Latin America Apostolate in Bolivia. In addition to the amount raised in gifts and pledges, $966,208 was raised through estate gifts to the Perpetual Light Society Endowment, corporate matched gifts and other gifts.
“I have seen how the ACA changes the lives of those who give and so many people in need in our community," said Tim Thompson, 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal Chairman. "My involvement with the ACA has definitely changed me.”
The Annual Catholic Appeal is held each spring in nearly 200 parishes. Catholics make pledges to support programs for people of all faiths that assist the homeless, the hungry, and families seeking an education for their children. Scholarships for students in Catholic schools, tuition grants, and support for teachers’ salaries are provided through the Appeal. Resources for pro-life programs, assistance for women and their babies, and family counseling are also made available.
