Speakers to promote consecrated life in parishes on World Day for Consecrated Life, February 5

At Masses celebrated at participating parishes this weekend (February 4-5), members of the St. Louis Area Vocation Directors (SLAVD) will be speaking on the topic of “Consecrated Life – Family Support in Building a Culture for Vocations.” The presentation, which coincide with the international celebration of World Day for Consecrated Life, February 5, are designed to increase vocation awareness and emphasis the support that discerning young people need from their families.

In the St. Louis Archdiocese, the celebration of the vocation of consecrated life was moved to autumn in 2007 to avoid February weather problems that often impacted attendance at a special Mass and luncheon for the religious. This year’s Mass for Consecrated Life will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on September 29, and details will be mailed to the religious closer to the date.

Archbishop Carlson calls on religious and laity to stand strong for respecting life in the face of government health care mandate

When referring to the Department of Health and Human Services mandate for nationwide coverage of contraceptive/abortive drugs and sterilization procedures in health care plans, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson recently stated, “The Church cannot, and will not, be silent in the face of this grave threat to religious liberty and the sanctity of human life.”

The Archbishop called on all Catholics – leadership, priests, those in consecrated life and the lay community – to write to representatives and senators to insist that rights of conscience be protected in all health care legislation.
