The formation of the beginning teacher is of special importance. The responsibility of teaching in a Catholic school for the first time is a graced moment for coming to understand and value teaching as a vocation and as a ministry. A beginning teacher’s initial experiences have a strong impact on his or her long-term success as a teacher and satisfaction with teaching as a career.

To assist with both the spiritual formation and professional development of new teachers during their first two years, the Catholic Education Office has developed a mentor program for beginning elementary and secondary school teachers in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Experienced teachers are invited by the principal to be mentors for teachers new to the profession and new to their school. New mentors receive training at a workshop designed for them and a handbook developed for them by the Catholic Education Office. The workshop and handbook provide new mentors with the information and skills needed to effectively guide and support the beginning teachers whom they will be assisting.
