Students from the South City Collaborative Catholic Schools presented checks today to Superintendent George J. Henry totaling $20, 021 to "Heal Haiti." Mr. Henry met students representing the schools in the rotunda of the new home of the Catholic Education Office at the Catholic Center, 4445 Lindell Boulevard. Before accepting their individual checks, he talked to them about why they had undertaken this project, how they accomplished their amazing total, and what they hoped to accomplish through their efforts. Students reported holding dress-down days, doing extra chores around their homes, and selling bracelets with the words, "Healing Haiti" on them as just a few of the ways they raised funds for their donation to help the children of Haiti who continue to suffer the effects of the recent catastrophic earthquake. "Our hands extend from the children of the City of St. Louis to the children of the City of Port-au-Prince," they said.
Mr. Henry noted that this is what we teach in Catholic school--to reach out to those in need, and he told the students he was proud of their efforts and to meet with them to accept their contribution. Students from the following schools presented their checks: Cathedral, Central Catholic/St. Nicholas, St. Ambrose, St. Frances Cabrini Academy, St. Gabriel the Archangel, St. James the Greater, St. Joan of Arc, St. Louis Catholic Academy, St. Margaret of Scotland, St. Raphael the Archangel, and St. Roch. All contributions will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services who continue their work of ministering to the needs of the people of Haiti and helping them to rebuild their country.
Other participating schools include Epiphany of Our Lord, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Most Holy Trinity, Marian Middle, St. Cecilia, St. John the Baptist, St. Katharine Drexel, and St. Stephen Protomartyr. Three other schools that participated sent their collections to other agencies helping in Haiti.
