The Presence of Jesus in the Family
On April 14-15, 2012, Region IX held its Hispanic Ministry gathering in Kansas City, KS.
The event focused on the Presence of Jesus in the Family.
Through the support of our parishes and the Annual Catholic Appeal, our Archdiocese was able to have a significant Hispanic delegation present. The parish leaders who participated were renewed in their faith and service to our families.

La Presencia de Jesús en la Familia
En Abril 14-15 del 2012, La Región IX tuvo su encuentro de ministerio hispano en Kansas City, KS. El enfoque del evento fue La Presencia de Jesús en la Familia.
Por medio del apoyo de las parroquias y la Colecta Católica Anual, nuestra Arquidiócesis pudo tener una delegación hispana presente. Los líderes pastorales que participaron renovaron su fe y compromiso al servicio de la familia.

En nuestra preparación del Triduum, nos detenemos atentamente para así reflexionar y orar por un aumento de humildad y gratitud. Que la gracia de Dios nos brinde más comunión en nuestras vidas y con su amor creador.

As we prepare to enter more deeply into the Triduum, we pause to reflect and pray for greater humility and gratitude. May God’s grace continue to bring us closer to one another and his love all around us.

A Child of the hills, I was taught early on in my life the power of nature. I was taught by farmers that wilderness land, the untamed environment, can give life and it can take life. In my girlhood I learned to watch for snakes, wildcats roaming, plants that irritate and poison. I know instinctively: I know because I am told by all knowing grown-ups that it is humankind and not nature that is the stranger on these grounds. Humility in relationship to nature's power made survival possible.

Una Oración de la Solidaridad y Consolación

La Oficina de Ministerio Hispano ofrece una oración de solidaridad y consolación para nuestros hermanos y hermanas de Comayagua y Tegucigalpa, Honduras afectados por el incendio trágico de la cárcel que tuvo lugar este martes pasado. Que la consolación del Espíritu Santo llegue a las familias que sienten la pérdida de sus seres queridos, y que las almas de los difuntos encuentren descanso en el amor de Dios.

Before the Cross | We must welcome strangers, respect others' dignity

This is my 115th "Before the Cross" column for the St. Louis Review. During the past two and a half years, I have enjoyed receiving feedback on my columns. Most of the time, people write to express their appreciation. Sometimes, however, I receive letters in which writers express their disagreement. I welcome different points of view as long as they are respectful. We would all benefit from more respectful disagreement and dialogue -- especially in the political arena!

One of my columns that generated a lot of heat was on immigration. It appeared in The Review's issue dated Jan. 12, 2010. Here is what I wrote in this column. I am reprinting part of it now because I believe it represents the position of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which has made this issue one of its top priorities for the coming election year.

"As a Catholic community, we vigorously support our nation's right and responsibility to provide secure boundaries for the protection of our people and to guard against those who would do us harm.
