Remarriage
Learning from the Past - Building for the Future
The Archdiocese of St. Louis offers marriage preparation specifically designed for engaged couples (or soon to be engaged) when one or both individuals have been married before.
(This previous union may have been dissolved by the
death of a spouse or through the divorce and annulment process.)
Though some may question the need for a preparation program, statistics indicate that the divorce rate for "second marriage" is higher than for first marriages. Whether one or both of you were previously married , there are issues of special concern for couples planning a "new" marriage and the workshop focuses on these areas.
If you are a priest or deacon looking for ways to help couples prepare for remarriage, please take a look at Catholic Remarriage.
If you are engaged and looking for ways to prepare for remarriage, resources to assist you can be found here: Ave Maria Press.
Step by step to begin your marriage preparation:
1. Speak to the priest or deacon at your parish who is preparing you for marriage about the options. Some parishes have remarriage preparation facilitators and you will not need to register with the Family Life office.
2. If the priest or deacon directs you to the Archdiocesan Family Life office for preparation, read and discuss the options for preparation and information below.
3. Note the date of the next remarriage preparation workshop. If you are unable to attend that weekend, review the marriage preparation course schedule for the core program. The information for registering for those courses is found on Class Schedule Page.
NOTE: The Office of Laity and Family Life cannot supervise your preparation. Preparation begins in your parish. All classes and other aspects of preparation must be approved by the priest, deacon, or preparing minister.
