World Mission Rosary

In February of 1951, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith from 1950 to 1966), inaugurated a World Mission Rosary in a radio address called The Catholic Hour. “We must pray, and not for ourselves, but for the world. To this end, I have designed the World Mission Rosary. Each of the five decades is of a different color to represent the continents.” Praying this rosary, Archbishop Sheen said, would “aid the Holy Father and his Society for the Propagation of the Faith by supplying him with practical support, as well as prayers, for the poor mission territories of the world.” To order a World Mission Rosary, please download our order form or contact our office at 314-792-7655.

Volunteer Opportunities

Have you ever considered becoming a mission volunteer? There are many mission outreach programs that offer short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities.

Catholic Network of Volunteer Service is a membership organization of domestic and international mission volunteer programs. More than 10,000 volunteers serve in the U.S. and in 108 other countries around the world, and are provided with recruitment services, training, and technical assistance. CNVS also publishes RESPONSE, a handbook of volunteer opportunities.

Maryknoll Lay Missioners is part of the Maryknoll family and has been preparing people to work in mission countries for over 30 years. Lay missioners serve in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and on the U.S. Mexico border. Single people, couples, families with children, religious, and ordained people are welcome to join, and are encouraged to participate in the mission of Jesus by serving the poor.

Mercy Volunteer Corps is a full-time lay volunteer program offering placements in the continental U.S. and Guyana, South America for a one or two year commitment. In partnership with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, volunteers enter into relationship with people who are economically poor or marginalized, and serve in Education, Healthcare, and Social Services. Volunteers commit equally to service, a simple lifestyle in community, and personal and communal spiritual growth.

Grace the Americas (formerly Propapa Missions America) is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers. It is a small charity driven by everyday people. Volunteers are involved in different ways: going on Brigades, collecting and making donations, helping run the organization, packing supplies, or soliciting others in the community to donate medical supplies or equipment.

St. Vincent Pallotti Center supports faith-based volunteer programs by linking volunteers with communities in need. Volunteers are supported in a variety of ways, including community living arrangements, spiritual development opportunities, professional development, stipends, and AmeriCorps Educational Awards. St. Vincent Pallotti Center also publishes newsletters for current and former volunteers, and Connections, a directory of volunteer opportunities.

Washington Overseas Mission is a humanitarian aid organization that has been sending medical, dental and construction teams to Honduras and Central America since 1992. Based in the small town of Washington, Missouri, volunteers have helped to improve the lives and health of over 100,000 people in this region of Central America. What began in 1992 with Dr. Tim Long and a few friends volunteering to work for a week in Honduras has grown into an organization that works year round organizing and funding a diverse range of humanitarian projects including health care, construction, water, scholarships and day care. Teams consisting of physicians, dentists, health care professionals, skilled-trade construction workers, students and general volunteers donate their time and skills to help the poorest of the poor in this third world area.
