Colleen CoughlinIt’s that time of year again! While many of us think of October as the month for autumn, pumpkins, and Halloween, it is also the month dedicated to world missions. Both around the world and here in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, World Mission Month was kicked off in style!

We began the month by celebrating the feast day of St. Therese of Lisieux on October 1st. St. Therese is the co-patron saint of the missions, along with St. Francis Xavier, and is known as the Little Flower. Our 4th annual Holy Childhood Association Mass was also celebrated on October 1st, and included a special focus for St. Therese. This year’s Mass was held at Holy Infant Parish in Ballwin, and it was the best Mass we’ve had yet! Bishop Robert Hermann, Msgr. Francis Blood, and several other priests from surrounding parishes celebrated the Mass. Sr. Rosario Delaney (principal of Holy Infant School) and her students, faculty, and staff did an outstanding job hosting the Mass and welcoming all of the students, teachers, and parents from around the Archdiocese. It was a joyful, festive celebration and was a great way for everyone who came to show their support of the missionary work of the Church – and in particular, their commitment to helping children through the Holy Childhood Association.

The St. Louis Review has been including coverage of World Mission Sunday. The October 9th edition included a four-page insert with photos and stories from the missions, and the October 16th edition will include a one-page poster and additional photos and stories. We are grateful to the St. Louis Review for their hard work in helping us to promote World Mission Sunday, and look forward to sharing more about the missions with the Archdiocese of St. Louis!

We are also very excited that Bishop Hermann will be celebrating the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the New Cathedral on World Mission Sunday – October 18th. It will be a wonderful opportunity for Catholics in the Archdiocese to come together and pray for the missions. Coffee and donuts will be served in Boland Hall afterwards!

Last, but not least, our National Office of the Pontifical Mission Societies has worked extremely hard to provide some fantastic resources for bringing mission into your life during this month of world mission and all year long. Their website has been updated to include posters, leaflets, downloads for kids, and “Mission Lessons” – one-minute audio snippets sharing stories from the missions.

Thank you for your support of missionaries and the people they serve. We are so grateful for the kindness and generosity that has always been given by the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and we look forward to celebrating the rest of World Mission Month with you!
