Laws Changing for Adoptees and Birth Parents

Effective January 1, 2018, laws impacting adult adoptees born in Missouri after 1941 will change. Adults who have been adopted with a closed adoption will now have access to their original birth certificates. For women and men who have placed a child for adoption after the year 1941, they may be contacted by their birth children or birth children's families. Adult adoptees may have access to birth parents name, date of birth, race, occupation, and address. To have birth parents names and other identifying information redacted from documents that adoptees receive, visit www.health.mo.gov to fill out the Birth Parent Contact Preference Form. Any questions may be directed to the Adoption Program at Good Shepherd Children & Family Services by calling 314-854-5700.
