Note: Once you have registered, cards will be mailed from our office.  You must have a card from our office in order to be confirmed.  We use a special card for the various confirmation dates so it is very important that you register with our office prior to May 27, 2012.

 Information Regarding Adult Initiation on Pentecost Sunday

  • This Rite is for baptized Catholics only and NOT for new Catholics as it does not include the Profession of Faith or Reception into Full Communion. Reception into Full Communion should ordinarily take place during a Sunday liturgy at the parish, by the parish priest according to the RCIA.
  • Confirmation cards will be mailed to your parish upon request. Please fax or email and indicate 1) parish, 2) contact person, 3) address to mail cards, and 4) total number of confirmands. There is no need to give us the names of those to be confirmed.
  • Reservations must be made by a parish representative. Cards will not be mailed directly to confirmands.
  • If you have already made a reservation please disregard this notice.
  • Preparation and catechesis for the Sacrament of Confirmation remain the responsibility of the pastor of the parish or those designated by him.
  • An announcement in your parish bulletin of this adult confirmation is recommended so that those wishing to complete their sacramental initiation may be prepared in due time.

Adult Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday

Adult Catholics who have not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation are invited to join Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, and nearly 200 other adult confirmands at the annual Mass for the Confirmation of Adults, May 27, 2012 (Pentecost Sunday) at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, 4431 Lindell Boulevard in St. Louis. Please contact [parish representative/phone number] for information on how to prepare to complete your sacramental initiation into the Catholic Church and to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Information for Coordinators

  • Please advise those attending that seating will be reserved for candidates and sponsors only, three candidates and three sponsors per pew. Family members and other guests are asked to take their places elsewhere. Unlike the Rite of Election and other celebrations of Confirmation, the pews will not be designated by parish.
  • Please be sure that both sides of the card are completed by Parish Staff only (cards should not be completed by Candidates). Return address should be that of confirming Parish. Be sure to affix postage (If the card will be mailed to Archives it is not necessary to affix postage).
  • Please do not write in the space designated for “Office of Worship use only”.  The name of the confirming Bishop will be filled in by the Office of Worship staff. The candidates’ cards will then be mailed as notice to the parish of baptism. The entries in the baptism register serve as a cross-reference to the marriage or confirmation registers. “The names of those confirmed, the minister, the parents, the sponsors and the place and date of the confirmation are to be recorded in the confirmation register to be kept in the parochial archive” (canon 895). The Cathedral Basilica records only the Confirmations of its own parishioners.
  • Each candidate must have their cream colored card in hand to present to the Bishop’s assistant at the time of the actual Confirmation. Only the names of Christian saints are properly chosen as confirmation names, unless good reason is provided in accord with canon 855. The date and name of the confirming Bishop or delegate may only be completed by the Office of Worship staff. The candidates’ cards will then be mailed as notice to the parish of baptism.
  • The reception of Confirmation must also be recorded in your parish confirmation register; the Cathedral Basilica records only the Confirmations of its own parishioners.
  • Nametags are strongly encouraged for Cathedral Confirmations. The nametag should have the confirmation name(s) only. Sponsor's should announce the candidate's confirmation name with a clear and distinct voice when they approach the bishop.
  • Reception of Confirmation is to be recorded at your parish; the candidates' cards will be mailed as notice to the parish of baptism. The Cathedral Basilica records only the Confirmations of its own parishioners.
  • All priests are welcome to concelebrate the Confirmation Mass in Archdiocesan chasuble and stole. Please vest in the Sacristy of the Cathedral Basilica.
