Nothing can prepare a parent, family and friends for a child dying prior to birth due to miscarriage, accident or other reason. Until now, little was available to assist the Church and the local community in responding in a pastorally sensitive manner to this tragedy.
For use in hospitals, homes and parishes, with or without the body present…
- the rite seeks to situate the death of an infant within the context of faith;
- the rite offers the opportunity to unite the grieving parents and family members to our merciful God;
- the rite is a celebration based upon Christian faith and hope.
The Order for the Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth provides for the claiming of the child within the context of a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word. Including a formal commendation of the child to the loving mercy of God, the rite allows for a blessing of the child as appropriate. Considering various pastoral circumstances, allowance is made for either a lay or clerical presider.
The order includes one copy of the ritual booklet for use by the presider. Each book also has a bound certificate as its title page so the entire booklet may be given to the parent(s).
