1978 Sacred Heart Parish in St Louis was organized in 1871 when a brick chapel was built at University and 20th Street to serve as outreach for St. Michael Parish. A new church of stone with a large marble statue of the Sacred Heart surmounting the dome was completed in 1899 at 23rd and University. A school was established in 1873 under the charge of four Sisters of Loretto. After 1902 the Sisters of St. Joseph staffed the school. Due to decline in local Catholic population the school was sold in 1963. The property was relinquished in 1982. The church building was demolished by a fire in 1986. The school building still stands (2008), property of LRA.
