Assumption Church, located at Sidney Street and 8th Street, was built in 1861, the only one built for English speaking Catholics in South St. Louis. Its school was staffed by Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In 1891 a larger church was needed it was decided that a new parish, St. Agnes, was built after a division of the parishioners. Due to the declining number of Catholics in the area the Assumption was closed in 1965.
