Closed Parishes

The Archives and Records Office retains the legacy of parishes that close, merge and consolidate. The sacramental records (baptism, first communion, confirmation, marriage and death albeit not a sacrament) of these parishes are maintained at the Archives and Records Office of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Individuals who require a copy of their sacramental records may do so by contacting the archives. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of maintaining these records. Current parishes send confirmation and marriage information for closed parishes to the Archives where staff members update the baptism and marriage registers just as they are done at active parishes. As previously noted, sacramental records are restricted to the individual named in the record or their guardian unless permission is obtained from that individual. After the passage of time, however, the restriction is lifted and the records are made available to the public for genealogical purposes. Records created in 1930 and prior are available without the requirement of authorization from the individual noted in the record. A nominal $10 fee is charged for these records. The few exceptions to the registers being located at the Archdiocesan Archives and Records Office are those at Perryville. These exceptions are noted in the list below which includes all 108 closed parishes, their former addresses and dates of founding and closing.
