This mosaic from the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis illustrates the celebration of the first Mass on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1698.

Canon 491 P.2 states "... the diocesan Bishop is to see that there is a historical archive in the diocese, where documents having historic value are carefully kept and systematically arranged".

The Archives and Records staff endeavors to assist researchers by making the heritage of the Archdiocese of St. Louis available to them within the guidelines of civil and canon law, conservation considerations and as resources permit. In so doing, Archives and Records materials contribute to the understanding of the historical experience in America and more specifically in the local St. Louis area.

Researchers are encouraged to write or call in advance of their visit. This allows one to confirm hours of service and the availability of particular records and microfilm equipment. It also gives the Archives staff an opportunity to identify those collections which bear most directly on an individual researcher's topic of interest, as well as to suggest other possible sources or methods.

The Archives and Records staff provide reference services to researchers in person, by mail and by phone. The staff will assist in the process and will suggest the examination of related materials whose usefulness may not be readily apparent. Research notes may be taken in pencil. Photocopying services are available at a nominal fee.

The Archives and Records Office reserves the right to restrict the copying of entire series of records or of records in fragile physical condition. Inquiries received through the mail will be answered within the limits of staff time and availability. Information on Archive and Records holdings and answers to specific questions will be provided although, for obvious reasons, the Archives and Records staff cannot engage in extensive research.
