Auditions for the Archdiocesan Adult, Children's, and Handbell Choirs of the St. Louis Archdiocese will take place this month and next.

Tryouts for all three groups will be held Monday-Wednesday, July 21-23, and Monday-Thursday, August 25-28, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, 4431 Lindell Boulevard, in the Central West End.

To arrange for an audition, call the Archdiocesan Office of Sacred Music at 314.533.7662 or e-mail the music office at For more information, visit and click on "Cathedral Music Programs."

Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis assistant organist Max Tenney promised tryouts will be "a very low-stress audition." Tenney assists John A. Romeri, director of the archdiocese's Office of Sacred Music, and Karen Romeri, who directs the handbell choir.

Those auditioning for the handbell choir "may not necessarily require that they have rung before, but the ability to read music is important," Tenney noted. Among its performances, the group participated in "Christmas at the Cathedral" as part of the Cathedral Concert Series in 2007.

Those trying out for the adult or children's choirs don't need to prepare any particular music, he said. The auditions should take about 15 minutes. There will be some scale singing and sight-reading of pieces to be performed in the coming year.
