Celebrating Life and Love Twice Given

St. Louis Archdiocese Fills Cathedral for Annual Adoption Mass

Each November in honor of National Adoption Month, the Archdiocese of St. Louis hosts an Annual Adoption Mass and reception at the Cathedral Basilica.

Birth parents and adopted children, parents, and families are honored in a special way. They're invited to bring up the gifts at Offertory, receive a special blessing by the bishop, the homily reflects the theme of adoption, and a reception is held in their honor after Mass.

Matt and Lauren Bohnert hold their young daughter who they adopted with the assistance of the Archbishop Carlson Adoption Fund. The Bohnert Family spoke at the 41st Annual Respect Life Convention and brought up the gifts at this year's Adoption Mass on Nov. 19.

This year was no different. To a filled Cathedral, Bishop Mark Rivituso celebrated adoption as the gift of love twice given by speaking to the heroism of both birth and adoptive parents and how the children enrich their lives.

Bishop Rivituso then related the gift of adoption to the universal spiritual adoption we all have as children of God. He asked all present to relect on how they can "be the adopted child God has called me to be?" and challenged them to always "affirm one another, enrich your families, and live out the radiance of Jesus."

This annual event is hosted jointly by the Respect Life Apostolate, Good Shepherd Children & Family Services and the Office of Natural Family Planning.

Archbishop Carlson to celebrate annual Adoption Mass this Sunday

For more information contact:

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will celebrate a Mass honoring the loving gift of adoption on Sunday, November 24th, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis (Lindell Boulevard and Newstead). Mass begins at 10am. All who have been involved in an adoption and foster care in any way are warmly invited to attend.

The Annual Adoption Mass is designed to reach anyone who has been touched by adoption, such as an adopted person, birth parents of an adopted child, foster and adoptive parents, or an infertile couple waiting to adopt a child. All are welcome to come and give thanks for the gift of life made possible through adoption.

Adoption plays a central role in Christianity. From Moses to Our Lord, there are many scriptural examples of adoption. Christians are also called to participate in the faith as adopted sons and daughters of God through Christ (Gal. 4:4-6) because we are called to love one another in the same way that we have been loved.

Archbishop Carlson has taken a leadership role in promoting adoption since arriving in St. Louis in 2009. He helped establish the Archbishop Robert J. Carlson Adoption Fund in 2009 to help couples offset some of the costs associated with adopting children.  Every year since the Fund’s inception, couples have had assistance in funding their adoption and building families through the grant award, maintained through funding efforts of the Archdiocesan Office  of Natural Family Planning.

A reception will follow Mass in Boland Hall. Raffle tickets to benefit the Archbishop Robert J. Carlson Adoption Fund will be available for purchase after Mass.
