ST. LOUIS – The Catholic Education Office of the Archdiocese of St. Louis will host the annual Health and Safety Summit on Thursday, June 7, 2018, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart School (12 Ann Ave., Valley Park, MO).Keynote speaker, Elizabeth Arn Makulec will speak on the topic “Lessons Learned in Lending Hope to Prevent Suicide” between 8:30-9:45 a.m. Break-out sessions begin at 9:55 a.m. Elizabeth Ann Makulec has been with Kids Under Twenty One for several years, speaking to many national, state, and local organizations on making people aware of suicide awareness and prevention.Lessons have been learned and the way we talk about suicide has changed. Suicide most often occurs when stressors exceed the current coping capacity of someone suffering from a mental health condition. The way we support people experiencing suicidal ideation is changing too. No longer whispered about in guarded tones, the task of preventing suicide is becoming “everybody’s business” in Missouri. Prevention advocates, intervention specialists, and crisis service providers, along with loss and attempt survivors are lending hope that is helping people find the strength and support that make their lives worth living, and lives are being saved.More than 30 break-out presentations are scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions. Topics include “Basic School Safety Issues,” “Head Injury and Concussion,” and “Dealing With Grief.” The second round of morning break-out sessions begin at 11:05 a.m. Afternoon sessions begin at 1:05 p.m.The numerous break-out sessions during the conference are intended for a wide-range of attendees including pastors, principals, teachers, Parish School of Religion (PSR) coordinators and catechists, school nurses, maintenance personnel and athletic directors. Nearly 300 school and parish personnel are registered for the summit, representing nearly all of the 107 Catholic elementary schools across the eleven counties of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
