About Lay Formation

About the Paul VI Lay Formation Program

The Lay Formation Program forms lay men and women as Missionary Disciples through three years of intellectual, spiritual and pastoral formation.

"Those who have opened their hearts to God's love, heard His voice and received His light, cannot keep this gift to themselves." - Pope Francis Lumen Fidei 37

The Goals of the Program:

  • To provide instruction for mind and heart that invites a deepening relationship with Christ and His body the Church
  • To foster a deepened awareness of and openness to the action of God's grace
  • To promote the development of skill in speaking with others
  • To offer opportunities that help to raise consciousness of the intimate relationship between love of God and love of neighbor

Participants are selected by their pastors. Those who complete the three year program are commissioned to a 3 year commitment to volunteer service in their parishes. Currently men and women who have completed this program are serving in their parishes in such areas as adult faith formation, liturgy, RCIA, PSR, pastoral ministry, ACTS and CRHP retreats, service to the poor through St Vincent DePaul, evangelization, and more.

Comments from previous participants:

"The Lay formation program was life changing –this is not an exaggeration or an overstatement. Though I believed my prayer life was pretty strong, I could not have predicted how it would increase and expand with in-depth catechesis. Further, I found myself with a better understanding of the vocations of priests and religious and my own vocation as a wife and mom. My daily prayer habits have dramatically changed."

"I really can't begin to tell Archbishop Carlson and everyone involved in the program how much the last 3 years of Lay Formation has enriched my life in Christ. Through this enrichment I have become more aware of people around me and what they are feeling. It opened new doors for praying and how I process my actions and how I can improve my life with Christ. "

Whoever had the idea for the Lay Formation program, and all of you who saw it through and put your hearts and souls into sharing such a rich treasury of information and teaching us how to seek out and find that information on our own – you can't even begin to imagine what a ripple you have started here in our archdiocese. It goes beyond information to a real relationship with Jesus Christ, as was modeled to us through the dedicated teachers and lay men and women who shared and witnessed to us over those three years.
