Annual Red Mass for Members of Judicial and Legal Community

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice - mosaicThe tradition of the Red Mass began in thirteenth-century Europe and became known as such for the red robes traditionally worn by judges in the Middle Ages. It was first celebrated in the United States in 1928 and in the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1943. As has been the custom throughout the centuries, judges are invited to join in the procession that opens the celebration.

People of all faiths are invited to this annual Mass, held at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
